From mapping the mysteries of black holes to shaping international science policy, Sir Martin Rees, Lord Rees of Ludlow, is a renowned British astrophysicist and cosmologist.

First joining as an RSA Fellow forty years ago, Sir Martin is best known for his pioneering work in galaxy formation and the structure of the universe. Having served as the Astronomer Royal, President of the Royal Society and currently a member of the House of Lords, we asked Sir Martin to share why the RSA Fellowship remains close to his heart and continues to inspire him.

Why are building connections important?

Curious about the power of professional networking in the science world, we asked Sir Martin Rees for his view. He emphasised the importance of establishing new connections as being “very important at all levels.” He stressed the incredible value of building new friendships through professional societies and thought-provoking events like RSA’s lectures and gatherings.

Championing diversity

From Sir Martin’s perspective, the RSA Fellowship can cater to a wide range of individuals: “The Fellowship is very varied. I can imagine it is especially valuable for retired academics who are living in the country”, he explained. For Sir Martin, living in Cambridge gives him the advantage of constant academic interaction. He acknowledged how, for those “retired to some small town where there is no immediate contact with people in their field”, the RSA’s community provides an invaluable opportunity for engagement. He went on to highlight how those in more remote locations “benefit hugely from these networks locally like Zoom” or, in person.

The RSA provides an enriching space for individuals to share ideas, grow professionally, and make long-lasting positive impact. As Sir Martin’s experience shows, the Fellowship truly embodies a diverse, supportive, and forward-thinking community that benefits people at all stages of their lives.

The RSA Fellowship is open to everyone over the age of 18, and we actively welcome new voices and perspectives. We believe in building a diverse and dynamic community, so if you’re interested in joining, the application process is straightforward and accessible to all.
