Join us for a review of the biggest scientific stories of the year, as told by the team at New Scientist. Plus, put your questions to our expert panel of journalists about their favourite articles of 2024 and what they predict will be the big science stories of 2025 and beyond.
On the panel will be Senior News Editor Sophie Bushwick, Culture Editor Alison Flood and our Editor-in-Chief Catherine de Lange all hosted by Podcast Editor Rowan Hooper.
Sophie Bushwick is senior news editor at New Scientist. She has more than a decade of experience as a science and technology journalist based in New York City and has previously worked for outlets including Scientific American and Popular Science. You can also listen to her regular appearances on Science Friday. Sophie has a bachelor's degree in physics from Carleton College and was a 2011 AAAS Mass Media Fellow.
Alison Flood is New Scientist’s comment and culture editor. She has a degree in English literature from the University of Cambridge and was previously books writer for The Guardian. She is judging the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction in 2024, chairs the British Book Awards’ Crime and Thriller Book of the Year award and has also judged the Costa first novel award and the Orwell prize for political fiction. She has contributed essays and forewords for titles including Poor Souls’ Light, a collection of stories inspired by Robert Aickman, and Literary Landscapes. She writes a monthly round-up of the best new science fiction for New Scientist, and also runs the New Scientist Book Club. She reads a lot of books.
Catherine de Lange is New Scientist’s Editor. An award-winning science journalist, she has spent the best part of a decade at New Scientist, working in numerous roles including head of the features department and coronavirus editor, as well as editing features and news. Her specialism is biomedical science with a particular interest in nutrition, exercise, genetics, neuroscience and psychology. Prior to joining New Scientist, she worked as a freelance journalist, editor and video and audio producer. Her work has also been published in Nature, The Observer, The Telegraph, BBC Future, BBC Science Focus and more. She is the author of two books. Her latest is Brain Power: Everything you need to know for a healthy, happy brain. She has a BSc in human sciences from University College London and an MSc in science media production from Imperial College London.
Rowan Hooper is podcast editor at New Scientist and host of the New Scientist Weekly podcast. He has been at New Scientist for over 15 years, covering all aspects of science. He has a PhD in evolutionary biology and worked in a conservation biology lab in Japan for five years, before joining the Japan Times in Tokyo and later taking up a fellowship in a physics lab at Trinity College Dublin. His work has also appeared in The Economist, The Guardian, Wired, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. He lives in London with his partner and two daughters. His latest books are Superhuman - Life at the extremes of mental and physical ability and How to Spend a Trillion Dollars – The 10 global problems we can actually fix.

Access to a recording of the event will be exclusively available to registrants for the 12 months following the live event.
